Keep your home safe during darker nights

As October 2017 is National Home Security Month, we thought we'd offer some tips to help you keep your home safe as the darker nights draw in and Halloween is around the corner.

~ Entry and exit doors: fit a door chain and use it.
~ Locks: lock doors at all times. You should also fit locks to all downstairs windows. Make sure you have secure locks on your garden gates too.
~ Lights: consider fitting motion-sensitive lights in darker areas. These will also help light your way home. You can also put timers on indoor lights to brighten your home while you're away and make it look occupied.
~ Approach: if you have large bushes or tall trees that block your home, then cut them back. This will also let more light into your home during the winter months.
~ Valuables: make sure they are kept out of sight. Use a UV marker to identify expensive items.
~ Social media: as lovely as it is to tell your friends about your amazing holiday, you're also announcing to the world that your home is currently empty. Be digitally aware.

And finally, consider joining your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme. If we all look out for each other, then we'll create a community that everyone will be proud to live in.

Stay safe this October!
