Property market review for Newark and Southwell

When a fresh faced, chartered surveyor came to Southwell in 1982 to join a local estate agency, he fell in love with both a town and an area; a property love affair that has lasted more than 40 years.

He said: “Traditionally, August used to be a quiet month for property sales when families went on holiday in search of sunshine, but now the heat is on the local property market.

 

“House prices in the area are continuing to rise, partly due to a general lack of housing stock and partly due to a glut of ‘ready to move’ buyers who are still seeking homes with more space and larger gardens.

 

“New properties coming to the market are receiving plenty of viewings and offers; most sales in our experience are at, or close to full asking price. 

 

“And particularly desirable properties, such as 4+ bedroom detached houses in Southwell, or quality detached bungalows are often selling over asking price.

 

“In Newark, the smaller starter/investment home around the £150,000 price are sought after, as the space and opportunities for growth they offer can be quite significant. For those seeking detached homes, we are seeing huge interest in both Fernwood and Middlebeck.

 

“Out in the surrounding villages, character farmhouses, cottages and barns fulfil the desire for rural living at its best.”

 

For Alasdair, although 40 successful years as an independent estate agent seems to have gone by in the blink of an eye, the types of properties still proving popular haven’t really changed. He finished: “Had I written this article 40 years ago, it would have been very similar, but the property values would be missing a ‘0’!”
